Takeo Saito 斎藤健男 (1929–2016) was a respected and influential traditional kokeshi craftsman from the Zao region in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan.
Takeo born in 1929, in the heartland of traditional kokeshi making. He was deeply rooted in the traditions of the Zao kokeshi style, which is known for its elegance, delicate features, and often bright red and orange floral or pine-like designs.
Saito’s dolls are particularly admired for their precise facial expressions, balance of form, and subtle yet vibrant decoration. His kokeshi often feature refined brushwork, with serene, slightly mysterious facial expressions. Use of natural wood tones with red and orange motifs, often arranged in symmetrical patterns down the body. A high polish and soft curvature, giving a warm, tactile quality to the wood.
Many collectors view his pieces as embodying the “soul of Tohoku”, the northeastern region of Japan where kokeshi originated.
