K18156 - Sosaku by Sato Hatsutaro 佐藤初太郎

This Sōsaku Kokeshi by Sato Hatsutaro (佐藤初太郎) beautifully reflects the refined modern sensibility that emerged within Japan’s postwar creative kokeshi movement. With its elongated silhouette, delicately balanced proportions, and expressive hand-painted details, the piece embodies the artist’s distinctive fusion of traditional folk aesthetics and mid-century artistic experimentation.

The kokeshi features a slender cylindrical body decorated with rhythmic horizontal striping in black and warm orange tones, creating a striking geometric harmony. Its expressive head, with softly painted eyes and delicate facial features, is framed by ornamental side buns adorned with hanging green accents that resemble traditional hair ornaments. The subtle use of color against the natural pale wood gives the doll a graceful, almost contemporary elegance while preserving the warmth of handcrafted folk art.

Sato Hatsutaro was active primarily during the Shōwa 30s era (mid-1950s to 1960s), a period when creative kokeshi artists explored increasingly individualistic and sculptural forms. His works are especially admired for their careful carving, refined symmetry, and quiet emotional presence. Some of his known commemorative creations were produced around 1960 as prayers for world peace, reflecting the deeply reflective atmosphere of postwar Japan and the hopefulness of the era.

This piece captures that spirit beautifully — balancing simplicity and sophistication through clean lines, restrained decoration, and a gentle human expression. The natural wood grain remains visible throughout the form, emphasizing the handcrafted quality and organic beauty central to the sōsaku kokeshi philosophy.
