K18177 - Naruko Kokeshi by Yukio Onuma 大沼幸夫
This Naruko Kokeshi by Yukio Onuma (大沼幸夫), a respected traditional kokeshi craftsman associated with the Naruko system (鳴子系) of Miyagi Prefecture.
Naruko is one of the best-known traditions of dentō kokeshi (伝統こけし), distinguished by its well-proportioned cylindrical body, rounded head, delicate facial painting, and bold floral decoration. This example has a particularly charming presence, with finely painted black hair framing a serene expression and a series of striking red stylized flowers with dark leaves running vertically down the body. The restrained palette of natural wood, vermilion red, and black gives the doll a wonderfully graphic quality while remaining deeply rooted in Tōhoku folk aesthetics.
Yukio Onuma (大沼幸夫) was known as a skilled Naruko-system kōjin (工人), or traditional kokeshi craftsman. His work has been recognized at the All-Japan Kokeshi Doll Contest, and examples are appreciated by collectors for their balanced forms and faithful continuation of Naruko craftsmanship. His dolls are also frequently signed simply 「幸夫」 (Yukio) on the base.
