K25146 - Bamboo Echizen Take Ningyō 越前竹人形

This Echizen bamboo folk craft (越前竹人形) represents a dramatic figure from Noh and Kyōgen theater (能楽/狂言)—specifically a demon woman (鬼女 / Kijo). Created as a traditional omiyage from Fukui Prefecture (福井県美術工芸品), the piece blends theatrical imagery with the refined craftsmanship of Echizen bamboo work.

The figure is constructed primarily from natural bamboo, skillfully cut and assembled to form the body, arms, and garments. The use of bamboo nodes, grain, and natural coloration gives the sculpture a raw, organic presence. The lower body features darker bamboo segments, while lighter bamboo pieces form the robe-like upper structure, echoing the layered costumes seen in classical stage performances.

The most striking feature is the expressive mask-like face, carved and painted to resemble a Noh kijo mask—with sharp teeth, intense eyes, and a haunting expression that conveys jealousy, rage, or supernatural transformation. This is dramatically enhanced by the wild, voluminous red hair, a powerful visual symbol often associated with female demons in Japanese theatrical tradition.

The figure’s simplified, articulated arms and the cord details across the torso suggest movement and costume structure, referencing the stylized gestures of Noh performance. The small hanging plaque reading 「越前竹人形」 identifies the work as part of the Echizen bamboo doll tradition, a regional craft known for transforming bamboo into expressive figurative art.
