This vintage Naruko kokeshi Kou Sakurai 桜井コウ (1897–1978), one of the most celebrated female artists in the history of traditional kokeshi. Born in Yamagata City as the daughter of a family of barbers, Kou married the renowned craftsman Sakurai Mannojō and followed him through years of movement between Yamagata, Naruko, Sendai, and Yonezawa before the family finally settled in Naruko. While assisting her husband, she developed a passion for painting kokeshi and, from around 1930, formally refined her skills under the guidance of Ōnuma Iwazō.

Kou Sakurai became widely admired for introducing a distinctly feminine sensibility to Naruko kokeshi. Her dolls are especially known for their graceful expressions and elegant hairstyles adorned with decorative motifs. This piece beautifully exemplifies her signature style. The large rounded head features a gentle, smiling expression with softly arched eyes and delicate red lips. The hairstyle is decorated with the characteristic mizuhiki-inspired ornament, which Kou affectionately referred to as the "ichōgaeshi" (ginkgo-leaf style), lending the doll an air of refined sophistication.

The body displays hand-painted floral motifs rendered in soft shades of vermilion. Unlike the bold chrysanthemums often associated with Naruko kokeshi, these blossoms possess a lighter, more delicate quality, echoing the subtle elegance for which Kou's works are treasured. The restrained palette and fluid brushwork create a sense of quiet beauty and feminine warmth.

After the war, Kou continued painting on the wooden forms turned by her husband, and later occasionally collaborated with other craftsmen following Mannojō's passing. Due to frequent illness in her later years, her production remained limited, making her works increasingly sought after by collectors of traditional kokeshi.
