K28178 - Sosaku Shingata Kokeshi by Shibutaro 渉太郎
This Shingata Kokeshi by Shibutaro (渉太郎) from 1970s, it beautifully reflects the transition between traditional kokeshi aesthetics and the more decorative styles that emerged during the postwar folk craft movement. The doll features a graceful cylindrical form topped with a large expressive head, creating a balanced silhouette characteristic of mid-20th-century shingata (“new style”) kokeshi.
Its most striking feature is the series of vivid hand-painted camellia blossoms (tsubaki, 椿) adorning the body. Rendered in brilliant vermilion red against a deep black lacquer-like background, the flowers create a bold and elegant contrast. In Japanese culture, the camellia has long been admired as a symbol of beauty, dignity, and the quiet arrival of spring. The stylized blossoms, paired with delicate green leaves and rhythmic striped detailing near the collar and base, give the piece a refined yet cheerful presence.
The doll’s expressive face carries a nostalgic warmth, with softly painted features framed by black and red accents in the hair ribbons, evoking the aesthetic of classic regional kokeshi from northern Japan. The slightly aged surface and visible traces of handcraft further enhance its vintage charm and authenticity.
Shingata kokeshi emerged during the Shōwa era as artists began experimenting beyond strict traditional regional forms while still preserving the essence of kokeshi craftsmanship. Pieces such as this beautifully embody that evolution — blending folk simplicity with decorative artistry and playful individuality.
