A striking vintage Japanese shikishi print reproducing a vivid Mount Fuji landscape (富士山図) by Ryūzaburō Umehara (梅原龍三郎, 1888–1986), one of the major figures of modern Japanese Western-style painting.
The scene feels almost tactile: thick-looking strokes and strongly outlined forms create a sense of depth, while the contrast between the white peak of Fuji and the fiery colours of the surrounding landscape gives the work a dramatic, almost expressionistic quality.
Ryūzaburō Umehara (1888–1986) was one of the most important Japanese painters of the 20th century and a leading figure in Yōga (洋画), the Japanese tradition of Western-style oil painting.
He studied in Europe and was deeply influenced by modern French painting, especially Pierre-Auguste Renoir, while developing a highly individual style after returning to Japan. Umehara became known for combining Western oil-painting techniques with a distinctly Japanese sense of colour, rhythm, and composition.
His works often feature landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and views of Mount Fuji, painted with vigorous brushwork and rich, glowing colour. Fuji became one of his especially recognizable subjects, allowing him to reinterpret one of Japan’s most iconic landscapes through a modern painterly language.
Umehara received major cultural honours during his lifetime and played an important role in the development of modern Japanese painting.
