A refined original Japanese shikishi calligraphy artwork featuring a bold four-character inscription executed in expressive black ink, accompanied by the artist’s signature and red seals.
The large characters are written with confident, flowing brushstrokes, alternating between broad areas of dense ink and lighter, more spontaneous lines. The composition has a strong visual rhythm, giving the work both decorative presence and a distinctly contemplative character.
On the reverse is a handwritten explanatory phrase:
“Always hold sincerity in the highest regard.”
The key concept is 誠実 (seijitsu) — sincerity, honesty, faithfulness, and integrity.
In Japanese ethical thought, seijitsu describes a person who acts genuinely and truthfully, without deceit or superficiality. The reverse inscription therefore gives the artwork a clear moral message: to live with sincerity and to treat honesty as a guiding principle in everyday life.
The strong calligraphic forms contrast beautifully with the generous empty space of the shikishi, allowing each brushstroke to stand out. The work carries the simplicity and directness often found in Japanese philosophical and moral calligraphy, where a short phrase can serve as a daily reminder of how one wishes to live.
