This Zeze-yaki (膳所焼) matcha chawan, crafted by Yōen Kiln (陽炎園), reflects the refined aesthetic long associated with tea ceramics from the Zeze region of Shiga Prefecture, while also drawing inspiration from the classic form of the Tenmoku chawan (天目茶碗).

The bowl is formed in a graceful, slightly flared profile with a well-balanced foot—characteristics reminiscent of Tenmoku tea bowls, which traditionally feature a deeper body and gently outward-opening rim. This shape not only enhances the visual presentation of matcha but also aids in whisking, allowing the tea to gather naturally at the center.

Its surface is coated in a deep, lustrous brown glaze, rich with subtle tonal variations that shift from warm amber to near-black depending on the light. This dark, glossy finish echoes the traditional Tenmoku style, historically prized for its ability to beautifully contrast with the vibrant green of matcha. The glaze pools softly along the curves, creating a sense of quiet depth and fluidity.

Encircling the body are delicate horizontal throwing lines, subtly visible beneath the glaze, adding rhythm and texture. Small, organic markings—whether intentional brush accents or natural kiln effects—introduce gentle variation, reinforcing the handmade character of the piece.

Zeze-yaki, historically favored by tea practitioners, is known for its understated elegance and close relationship with the tea ceremony. Yōen Kiln (陽炎園) continues this legacy, producing works that honor tradition while remaining quietly expressive.
