This vintage Tachibina kōgō (立雛香合) is a refined example of Kyō-yaki / Kyō-ningyō craftsmanship, created by Kyoto artist Kitamura Gakō (北村雅耕). Designed in the form of standing Imperial Hina dolls, the piece combines the gentle elegance of Kyoto doll-making traditions with the functional beauty of a tea ceremony incense container.

Emperor and Empress are rendered with serene expressions and softly stylized forms, evoking the quiet grace associated with Hinamatsuri (Girls’ Day) and the classical court culture of Kyoto. Their robes are richly hand-painted in vivid vermilion, deep purple, and brilliant turquoise, accented with delicate gold floral motifs that lend the piece a refined festive presence.

As a kōgō, the figure opens discreetly at the center to hold incense, embodying the Japanese appreciation for objects that unite artistry with ritual use. The slightly rounded, compact form gives it the warmth and intimacy characteristic of Kyoto ceramic doll traditions.

Kyō-yaki ceramics are celebrated for their refined painting techniques, elegant forms, and close relationship with the aesthetics of the tea ceremony. Likewise, Kyō-ningyō (Kyoto dolls) are among Japan’s most distinguished doll traditions, known for their sophisticated expressions, courtly beauty, and meticulous hand-finishing developed over centuries in the old capital.
