A charming vintage Japanese souvenir bottle opener from Matsuyama (松山), Ehime Prefecture, Shikoku. Made with a warm wooden handle and a playful hand-shaped metal opener, this piece is a wonderful example of nostalgic Shōwa-era omiyage culture, when practical household objects were commonly decorated as souvenirs of famous Japanese destinations.
The wooden handle is printed with 松山 (Matsuyama) and features two small illustrated figures labelled マドンナ (Madonna) and 坊っちゃん (Botchan). These characters reference Natsume Sōseki’s celebrated 1906 novel Botchan, which is set in Matsuyama. The story became so closely associated with the city that Botchan imagery remains one of Matsuyama’s best-known cultural symbols, particularly around the historic Dōgo Onsen area.
The metal section is especially distinctive, formed into a whimsical open hand, with the bottle-opening mechanism incorporated into the palm. A dark braided cord attached to the wooden handle allows the opener to be hung when not in use.
