A beautiful vintage Japanese Hagi-yaki (萩焼) ceramic sake cup, featuring a delicate pale pinkish-beige glaze and an elegant, understated form that reflects the rustic charm of traditional Japanese pottery.

The cup has a gently curved cylindrical silhouette, with a subtle narrowing at the centre and a softly rounded rim. Its surface is covered with a fine network of natural glaze crackles, known as Kannyū (貫入), creating an intricate texture that adds depth and character to the piece.

The warm, earthy tones and delicate variations in the glaze embody the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-sabi (侘寂), which celebrates simplicity, imperfection, and the beauty of natural materials.

Hagi-yaki is one of Japan's most celebrated traditional pottery styles, originating in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, during the early 17th century. Highly regarded in Japanese tea culture, Hagi ware is known for its soft, earthy glazes, subtle colour variations, and distinctive crackled surfaces.

One of its most fascinating characteristics is Hagi no Nanabake (萩の七化け), meaning “the seven transformations of Hagi.” This expression describes how Hagi pottery gradually develops changes in colour and appearance through repeated use, as liquids penetrate the fine crackles in the glaze.
