TC103 - Tachikichi meshichawan bowl たち吉
This elegant pair of 飯茶碗 (meshichawan / rice bowls) by Tachikichi (たち吉) reflects the refined simplicity and timeless craftsmanship for which the Kyoto-based maker has been celebrated for centuries.
Founded in 1752 during the mid-Edo period, Tachikichi is one of Japan’s most respected ceramic houses, renowned for harmoniously blending traditional Kyoto aesthetics with practical everyday design. Over more than 260 years, the brand has become synonymous with understated elegance, producing tableware that is both functional and quietly sophisticated.
Created in the spirit of Hagi-yaki (萩焼), these bowls embody the gentle and natural aesthetics associated with the famous pottery tradition of Yamaguchi Prefecture. Hagi ware is cherished for its soft tones, subtle glaze variations, and delicate crackled surface known as kannyū, all of which deepen in character over time through use — a beauty appreciated in Japanese tea culture as the “nurturing” of the vessel.
The bowls feature a calming palette of pale celadon-grey and blush pink, accented with delicate floral motifs rendered in muted red, green, and gold tones. The softly crackled glaze adds warmth and depth, while the lightweight and balanced form feels comfortable in the hands.
Designed as rice bowls yet versatile enough for small side dishes, desserts, or soups, this set beautifully captures the quiet elegance of both Kyoto craftsmanship and Hagi-inspired ceramic aesthetics.
