TC105 - Kintsugi Hagi-yaki Chawan Matcha Bowl 萩焼
Item for Kintsugi project. This Hagi-yaki (萩焼) chawan features the soft milky-white glaze and gentle translucency traditionally associated with Hagi ware, complemented by expressive hand-painted cobalt blue calligraphic motifs that give the piece a spontaneous and deeply personal character. Fine crackling across the glaze surface reflects the natural charm treasured in Hagi ceramics, where the ware slowly evolves through use and time.
Now heavily fractured with multiple visible cracks and separations, this chawan embodies the Japanese philosophy that beauty can emerge through imperfection and repair. Rather than concealing damage, Kintsugi celebrates the object’s history by restoring it with lacquer and gold, transforming breakage into part of the vessel’s aesthetic and spiritual narrative.
The extensive crack patterns of this bowl would create striking golden repair lines, making it an exceptional candidate for collectors, ceramic artists, or tea practitioners interested in the meditative art of restoration. Once repaired, the bowl could become even more visually compelling than before, carrying a renewed life and story within its surface.
Preserved with a wooden tomobako, this Hagi-yaki tea bowl stands as both a damaged ceramic artifact and a poetic opportunity for transformation — perfectly embodying the Japanese appreciation for fragility, passage of time, and rebirth through craftsmanship.
