VTT169 - Tsuko-Tegata from Kaga Province 加賀国

This traditional Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) wooden plaque is a commemorative travel talisman from Kaga Province (加賀国), a region renowned for its rich cultural heritage and refined craftsmanship during the Edo period.

Carved from finely grained natural wood, the plaque features bold calligraphy reading 通行手形, symbolizing safe passage and protection for the bearer. Alongside, the inscription 難関突破 (overcoming obstacles) adds a powerful auspicious meaning, making this piece not only a symbol of travel but also of perseverance and success in life’s challenges.

The reverse highlights its spiritual connection, bearing the inscription 安宅住吉神社 御守—an amulet from Ataka Sumiyoshi Shrine—along with references to 加賀国 安宅の関, a historic checkpoint once controlling passage along the Hokuriku route. This ties the piece directly to the legacy of Edo-period travel regulations and the famous barrier of Ataka.

Suspended from a sturdy braided cord in earthy tones and accompanied by a small bell, the tegata produces a gentle chime believed to ward off misfortune and ensure safe journeys.
