VTT182 - Tsuko-Tegata from Ritsurin Garden 栗林公園
This charming vintage Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) is a traditional Japanese wooden travel plaque featuring imagery from Ritsurin Garden (栗林公園), one of Japan’s most celebrated historical landscape gardens located in Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture.
Crafted in the classic pentagonal shape, the front is beautifully illustrated with a serene garden scene—arched wooden bridge, tranquil blue waters, lush greenery, and a vividly colored koi fish swimming below—capturing the refined beauty and harmony of traditional Japanese garden design. The inscription 栗林公園 (Ritsurin Koen) is prominently displayed, linking the piece to this iconic cultural site.
The reverse side features bold calligraphy reading 通行手形 (travel pass), along with the phrase 交通安全 (traffic safety), indicating its use as a good-luck charm for safe journeys. A red seal stamp adds an authentic, nostalgic touch.
Finished with a braided cord in purple and white tones and a small metal bell, this piece gently chimes with movement—traditionally believed to ward off misfortune and protect the traveler.
Both decorative and symbolic, this Ritsurin Garden tsuko-tegata is a delightful collectible, evoking the elegance of Japanese travel culture and the timeless beauty of one of Japan’s most famous gardens.
