Donko Kokeshi are a traditional style of kokeshi dolls from the Naruko region in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. They are known for their round, thick heads—which give them the name donko (meaning “sturdy” or “solid”)—and their cylindrical bodies decorated with simple floral or line patterns in red, green, and black. Like other kokeshi, Donko Kokeshi began as souvenirs for hot spring visitors and have become a cherished part of Japan’s folk art tradition, valued for their cute, compact design and nostalgic charm.
