K18079 - Zao kokeshi by Naoshi Okazaki 岡崎直志
A vintage Zao-style Kokeshi doll over 70 years old. This is the work of the renowned craftsman Naoshi Okazaki (1911–1976). Made from natural wood and hand-painted with a minimalist yet expressive face, the doll features the classic Zao style's floral patterns in rich red hues. The round head is adorned with vivid chrysanthemum-like motifs, while the cylindrical body showcases a symmetrical, stylized flower design. The simplicity and warmth of the expression paired with bold red brushwork are typical of the Zao lineage, known for its refined and delicate aesthetic. This piece represents the blend of elegance and tradition characteristic of Okazaki’s work.
Naoshi Okazaki was a distinguished Kokeshi craftsman from Shiroishi City in Miyagi Prefecture, known primarily for his contributions to the Zao-style Kokeshi tradition. Initially trained in the Yamagata school under notable artisan Sato Shoji, Okazaki later developed his own distinct style influenced by both the Zao and Yamagata traditions. He began creating Kokeshi dolls around 1940 and gradually refined a personal style recognized for its clean lines, expressive faces, and floral motifs.
His work is celebrated for its subtle elegance, featuring simplified facial expressions and symmetrical floral patterns, particularly the stylized chrysanthemums and plum blossoms painted with red and black inks. Okazaki's dolls typically have a soft, contemplative look, reflecting his meticulous craftsmanship and deep respect for traditional forms. He is considered one of the important figures in the post-war revival of traditional Kokeshi and influenced many artisans who followed.
