This vintage Japanese reference book, “Hanaiire / Mizusashi” (花入・水指), is part of the celebrated Chanoyu Annai (茶の湯案内, Guide to the Japanese Tea Ceremony) series, Volume 4. Written by renowned Japanese tea ceremony and ceramics scholar Taka Akanuma (赤沼多佳), it explores the history, craftsmanship, and aesthetic significance of two essential utensils in the traditional Japanese tea ceremony.

The book focuses on Hanaiire (花入), flower containers used to display seasonal arrangements during tea gatherings, and Mizusashi (水指), freshwater jars used to hold the clean water required for preparing matcha. Both objects play important roles in the tea ceremony, reflecting the Japanese appreciation for simplicity, natural beauty, and the philosophy of wabi-sabi.

Featuring high-quality photographs of 78 distinguished examples, including masterpieces preserved in Japanese museums and collections, the book examines their various forms, materials, historical development, and artistic characteristics. Detailed commentary provides valuable insights into traditional Japanese ceramics, metalwork, and the cultural significance of tea utensils.
