CB132 - Dorei Clay Bell from Kibitsu Shrine 吉備津宮

CB132 - Dorei Clay Bell from Kibitsu Shrine 吉備津宮

This is a vintage dorei (土鈴) clay bell crafted in the shape of a round ceremonial bell, featuring engraved inscriptions and a stylized chrysanthemum crest on the reverse. The front bears the inscription, referring to Kibitsu Shrine (吉備津宮), a historically significant Shinto shrine located in Okayama Prefecture.

Kibitsu Shrine is famous for its long, corridor-style honden (main hall), its deep connections to the legend of Momotaro (the Peach Boy), and its association with good fortune, protection from misfortune, and healing. The chrysanthemum motif on the back of the bell is reminiscent of imperial or noble symbolism, denoting the shrine's high status and long history.

This type of dorei would have been sold as an omamori (protective charm) or souvenir from the shrine, meant to bring good luck, ward off evil, and invite blessings of safety and happiness. The weathered glaze and muted earthen tones give it a rustic, sacred aesthetic that reflects its connection to centuries of regional tradition and spiritual culture in Japan.
