This pair of dorei (土鈴) clay bells is crafted in the shape of traditional red lanterns, each bearing the bold and ancient symbol of the manji (卍) in gold. These bells are associated with 浅草観音 (Sensō-ji Temple in Asakusa), Tokyo’s oldest and most beloved Buddhist temple. The form and design of the bells evoke the atmosphere of temple festivals and the lanterns that line the approach to the temple, giving them a nostalgic and spiritual presence.

The symbol featured on the lantern is the manji (卍), a traditional Buddhist icon that represents universal harmony, the Dharma (Buddhist teachings), and the balance of opposites. In Japan, it is widely used in religious contexts, especially in temples, where it symbolizes good fortune, eternity, and the footprints of the Buddha. The right-facing orientation and gentle angles distinguish it clearly from other uses in Western history. In Japanese culture, this symbol is sacred and auspicious.

These bells served as temple souvenirs or talismans, intended to bring protection and blessings to the home. Their sound, when rung, is believed to purify the air and drive away misfortune, aligning with the spiritual practices of Sensō-ji. Rich in cultural symbolism, these bells are both decorative and deeply meaningful, carrying the spirit of one of Japan’s most iconic temples.

Size: 4 x 5 x 5.5cm (Each)
