CB154 - Dorei Clay Bell of Haniwa 埴輪
CB154 - Dorei Clay Bell of Haniwa 埴輪
This is a hand-crafted dorei (土鈴) clay bell in the shape of a Haniwa (埴輪), a type of ancient Japanese terracotta figure. Sculpted in a natural, unglazed earthen tone, the bell takes the form of a solemn human face—minimalist yet expressive, with stylized almond-shaped eyes and a serene mouth. It is topped with a looped handle that is also part of the headpiece, featuring traditional design motifs suggestive of ceremonial or military headdress.
This piece is signed by the artist 莊 (Shō) and features a stamped seal at the back. The subtle red pigment traces on the cheeks and fine texture throughout suggest it may have been shaped and fired with deliberate rusticity to evoke the original Haniwa figures from the Kofun period (3rd–6th centuries). These figures were once placed around ancient tombs to serve spiritual or protective functions.
Though there is a visible crack along one side—possibly from age or firing stress—it does not compromise the bell's structural integrity and adds to its antique charm. Please refer to the photos for condition details.
An evocative piece that bridges ancient Japanese funerary art and folk craft, this dorei bell resonates not only with sound but with deep historical symbolism.
