CB161 - Yamahoko Dorei Bell from Iga Ueno Festival 伊賀上野まつり
A dorei (clay bell) in the form of a traditional yama float from the Iga Ueno Festival (伊賀上野まつり) in Mie Prefecture. Handmade and painted in vivid hues of red, black, white, and blue, the bell beautifully captures the festive spirit and rich decorative style of the dashi floats used in the autumn celebration. The body of the float features hand-painted wheels and panels adorned with folkloric patterns and landscape motifs, including pine trees and waves, symbolizing longevity and prosperity.
This particular clay bell was crafted by Miyazaki Pottery (宮崎屋陶房), a local kiln based in Ueno Nakamachi, and is modeled after one of the yama floats used during the procession that takes place annually in late October. The float’s rooftop is detailed with a crest-like flower symbol and topped with a red conical element resembling a festival lantern, through which the string is threaded for hanging or ringing.
Dorei like this are not only charming folk crafts, but also serve as talismans to ward off evil and attract good fortune. This bell is a wonderful keepsake that connects the holder to the traditions of Iga’s regional matsuri culture and its enduring local craftsmanship.
