This wooden bell (木製土鈴 / mokusei dorei) from Ōshima Island (大島) depicts a traditional figure dressed in the iconic Anko-san costume (あんこ衣装) — the distinctive festival attire of the island’s women.

The Anko-san costume is emblematic of Izu Ōshima’s cultural identity, featuring a blue headscarf adorned with a floral motif and a dark indigo garment patterned with white teardrop-shaped spots, representing stylized raindrops. This traditional outfit was historically worn by female workers and dancers during local matsuri (festivals), and has become a beloved symbol of Ōshima’s vibrant community life.

Expertly hand-painted, the bell captures the gentle expression of the Anko-san figure, radiating warmth and local pride. A red cord is attached for hanging, and inside the figure is a small pellet that creates a soft rattle sound when shaken — as is characteristic of dorei bells, which were traditionally used as protective talismans or festive charms.

This piece blends folk art and regional heritage, making it a wonderful example of Japan’s island-specific craft traditions and a meaningful collector’s item.
