CB178 - Dorei Clay Bell from Itsukushima Shrine 厳島神社
This is a handmade dorei (clay bell) set from Itsukushima Shrine (厳島神社), one of Japan’s most iconic and sacred Shinto shrines located on Miyajima Island in Hiroshima Prefecture. The bells are crafted in the oldest known shape of dorei — small, rounded, and hollow forms that produce a soft chime when shaken.
The bell on the right features a detailed motif of the treasure boat (宝船, Takarabune), a traditional symbol of good fortune and prosperity, especially associated with New Year celebrations. This motif reflects wishes for abundance, success, and safe journeys.
The bell on the left decorated with a raised relief of a traditional biwa (Japanese lute), often associated with music, culture, and the goddess Benzaiten — one of the Seven Lucky Gods. The soft pink tone and delicate finish of the bell evoke a sense of elegance and spiritual purity.
Together, these bells serve not only as charming folk art, but also as talismans meant to invite happiness, protect from misfortune, and carry the blessings of Itsukushima Shrine.
