CB179 - Dorei Clay Bell from Narai-juku 奈良井宿

CB179 - Dorei Clay Bell from Narai-juku 奈良井宿

A handmade dorei (clay bell) horse figure from Narai-juku (奈良井宿), part of the historical Nakasendō route in Nagano Prefecture. Known as 奈良井の土鈴 (Narai no Dorei), this folk craft captures the rustic charm and deep traditions of Japan’s post towns.

The bell is shaped like a small, endearing horse — a symbol of strength, perseverance, and good fortune in Japanese culture. Carefully molded from unglazed reddish clay, its surface is adorned with subtle hand-painted details: light blue hooves and muzzle, a deep brown mane, and a decorative golden family crest (kamon) on the side, adding a touch of elegance.

A purple cord is attached to the back, allowing it to be hung as a decorative amulet. When shaken, the soft chime produced by the clay bell inside evokes the peaceful atmosphere of rural Japan.

Such bells were traditionally sold as local souvenirs and protective charms, believed to bring good luck, ward off evil spirits, and celebrate the connection between humans and nature. This piece reflects the timeless simplicity and warmth of Narai-juku's artisanal heritage.
