CB193 - Dorei Bell of Kotobuki Ningyo 寿人形
This is a charming dorei (土鈴) clay bell crafted in the shape of a traditional sake bottle, adorned with joyful 寿人形 (Kotobuki Ningyō)—figures symbolizing celebration and long life. The design is whimsically painted with two cheerful child-like figures dressed in festive red and purple garments, reminiscent of ceremonial court attire, holding a sake ladle and a gourd flask, both symbols of abundance and happiness.
The bell is elegantly glazed in a glossy white finish, tied with a yellow decorative cord around the neck of the bottle. These motifs suggest that the bell was intended as a celebratory ornament, often given or displayed during weddings, New Year's festivities, or auspicious occasions to convey good wishes and enduring happiness.
The piece is signed by the artist 美峰 (Bihō), a known name in traditional decorative folk crafts, whose red seal and brush signature add an element of refined authenticity. Combining humor, elegance, and symbolism, this bell serves both as a lucky charm and a collector’s item celebrating Japan’s love of auspicious imagery and joyful tradition.
