This delightful dorei (土鈴) clay bell takes the form of a spotted deer (鹿), a beloved and culturally significant animal in Nara, Japan. Rendered in a charming folk style, the deer is painted in a deep brown hue with white spots on its back, referencing the sika deer that freely roam Nara Park, where they are considered sacred messengers of the gods in Shinto belief.

The deer is shown with its head tilted upward in an alert and endearing pose, its expression gentle and lively. A red braided cord is tied around its neck, from which hangs a tag reading:
「奈良の民芸品 鹿土鈴」
meaning “Nara Folk Craft – Deer Clay Bell.”

This piece functions both as a traditional bell and a souvenir that represents Nara's spiritual and historical identity. In Shinto mythology, deer are said to have carried the god Takemikazuchi to Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara, which is why the deer are protected and revered in the area.

Such clay bells are often collected as talismans or gifts, thought to bring good luck, protection, and blessings. The soft jingling sound when shaken adds a gentle auditory charm to its visual appeal.

A fine example of Japanese mingei (folk art), this deer bell beautifully blends regional tradition, religious symbolism, and handmade artistry.
