This is a dorei (土鈴) clay bell in the form of a cow (牛), crafted by Shōhō (昭峰)—a renowned maker of traditional Japanese ceramic figurines. The cow, one of the twelve animals of the Japanese zodiac (干支 / eto), represents the Ox, a symbol of patience, perseverance, and steady progress. In Japanese culture, the Ox is also associated with agricultural abundance, loyalty, and calm strength.

Beautifully modeled and hand-painted, the figure features a gentle, rounded form and soft expression, capturing the peaceful nature of the animal. A red cord loop allows it to be hung as a decorative charm, while the interior bell produces a delicate chime, in keeping with the protective and purifying function of traditional dorei bells.

It made by Shōhō, this bell reflects the workshop’s dedication to auspicious folk art. Shōhō’s figurines are often produced in connection with established ceramic studios such as Yakushi-gama (薬師窯), and are widely collected and gifted during the New Year, especially in the zodiac animal’s corresponding year.

Whether displayed as a lucky talisman, seasonal ornament, or part of a collection of Japanese folk crafts, this cow dorei embodies the warm charm and symbolic richness of traditional Japanese ceramics.
