CB247 - Arita-yaki Dorei Clay Bell 有田焼
This Arita-yaki 有田焼 dorei clay bell is a refined miniature crafted in fine porcelain, embodying the elegance and precision for which Arita ware is renowned. Unlike rustic earthen dorei, this piece features a smooth, lustrous glaze in a soft pale tone, lending it a gentle, luminous presence.
Its shaped as a gourd with a neatly formed loop at the top through which a braided green cord is threaded for hanging. The surface is adorned with understated hand-painted floral motifs in soft blue, classic sometsuke (染付) decoration. These simple blossoms and trailing stems evoke a quiet sense of nature, rendered with light, graceful brushwork.
As a dorei, the bell contains a small internal pellet that produces a faint, clear chime when moved. The sound is more delicate and refined than that of traditional clay bells, reflecting the material’s porcelain clarity. As with all dorei, this gentle tone is believed to purify the space, ward off negative influences, and invite calm and good fortune.
The piece beautifully balances craftsmanship and restraint. Its clean lines, subtle decoration, and slight variations from hand-painting reflect an appreciation for wabi-sabi, where simplicity and quiet imperfection enhance its charm.
Elegant yet unassuming, this Arita-yaki dorei is both a decorative ornament and a small talisman, carrying with it the serene beauty of Japanese porcelain tradition and the soft resonance of protective sound.
