CB264 - Dorei Clay Bell from from Ise Jingū 伊勢神宮
This horse-shaped 五十鈴 (Isuzu) dorei clay bell from Ise Jingū (伊勢神宮) reflects the quiet elegance and spiritual atmosphere associated with Japan’s most sacred Shinto shrine. Formed in a warm unglazed terracotta tone, the bell features a stylized horse with simple carved details and the embossed character 「神宮」(Jingū), emphasizing its connection to the revered shrine traditions of Ise.
Named after the sacred Isuzu River (五十鈴川) that flows through the grounds of Ise Jingū, these dorei bells have long been treasured as protective charms and commemorative folk crafts. In Japanese culture, the horse symbolizes strength, safe journeys, sincerity, and devotion, while the gentle sound of a dorei is believed to purify the surroundings and invite good fortune.
Unlike brightly painted bells, this piece embraces a minimal, earthy aesthetic that highlights the natural texture of the clay and the understated beauty of traditional shrine craftsmanship. Its restrained design gives it a timeless folk-art character, equally suited for display or collection.
Please note there are small cracks visible on the front underside area, consistent with age and handmade production. The condition has been reflected in the price.
