CB266 - Dorei Clay Bell from from Ise Jingū 伊勢神宮
This vintage boar-shaped 五十鈴 (Isuzu) dorei clay bell from Ise Jingū (伊勢神宮) is a charming example of traditional Japanese shrine folk craft. Made in a soft unglazed terracotta finish, the bell features a stylized wild boar with simple carved details and the embossed character 「神宮」(Jingū), connecting it to the sacred traditions of Japan’s most revered Shinto shrine.
The name 五十鈴 (Isuzu) refers to the sacred Isuzu River flowing through the grounds of Ise Jingū, a place deeply associated with purification and spiritual harmony. Dorei clay bells from the shrine have long been cherished as protective charms believed to ward off misfortune and invite peace and good fortune into the home.
In Japanese symbolism, the boar (inoshishi, 猪) represents courage, determination, vitality, and perseverance. As one of the twelve zodiac animals, it is admired for its fearless spirit and straightforward nature. The warm earthen texture and minimalist form of this piece reflect the quiet beauty and sincerity found in traditional shrine crafts.
When gently shaken, the bell produces a soft, calming sound reminiscent of the peaceful atmosphere surrounding Ise Jingū. A meaningful collectible and decorative folk ornament, this dorei beautifully embodies the spiritual charm and timeless simplicity of Japanese mingei tradition.
