CB270 - Dorei Clay Bell from Akama Jingū 赤間神宮
This striking Heikegani-suzu (平家かに鈴) dorei clay bell from Akama Jingū (赤間神宮) is inspired by one of Japan’s most haunting and legendary folk tales. Crafted in a vivid red glaze with flowing carved details, the bell is shaped in the form of the famous Heike crab (平家蟹), whose shell markings are said to resemble the face of a samurai spirit.
Akama Jingū, located in Shimonoseki, is closely connected to the tragic history of the Heike (Taira) clan, who were defeated during the Genpei War in the 12th century. According to legend, the spirits of fallen Heike warriors transformed into crabs dwelling in the nearby sea, giving rise to the mysterious Heikegani folklore. This bell reflects that enduring story, blending history, spirituality, and regional folk tradition into a symbolic shrine charm.
Dorei clay bells such as this have long been treasured in Japan as talismans believed to ward off misfortune and purify the surroundings through their gentle sound. The rich red coloring evokes both protective symbolism and the dramatic imagery associated with the Heike legends, while the hand-carved texture preserves the warmth of traditional folk craftsmanship.
A unique collectible from Akama Jingū, this Heikegani bell beautifully captures the atmosphere of Japanese mythology, shrine culture, and regional mingei artistry.
