This charming Dorei Clay Bell by Yakushigama (薬師窯) takes the form of the Rat (Nezumi), the first animal of the Japanese zodiac. With its rounded body, bright red ears, delicate floral motifs, and gentle expression, it perfectly captures the warmth and playfulness that have made Yakushigama's seasonal figurines beloved throughout Japan.

Founded in Seto, one of Japan's most celebrated ceramic centers with a history spanning over a thousand years, Yakushigama is renowned for creating auspicious ornaments and zodiac figures that blend traditional symbolism with approachable folk-art charm. Each piece is handcrafted and hand-painted, reflecting the kiln's dedication to preserving Japanese decorative traditions while bringing joy to everyday life.

As the first sign of the zodiac, the Rat symbolizes prosperity, fertility, adaptability, and the beginning of new cycles. In Japanese culture, rats have long been associated with abundance and wealth, partly due to their connection with bountiful harvests and their role as the messenger of Daikokuten, one of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune. The floral decorations adorning this figure further evoke wishes for happiness, growth, and a flourishing future.

Designed as a traditional dorei (土鈴), the figure contains a small clay pellet that produces a soft, soothing rattle when gently shaken. Historically, such bells were believed to ward away misfortune, purify the home, and invite blessings and good luck to those who kept them nearby.
