This delightful vintage pair of Haniwa Suzu (はにわ鈴) titled Fuku Koma (福駒) combines Japan's ancient heritage with the gentle charm of traditional folk crafts. Inspired by the distinctive haniwa clay figures of the Kofun period (3rd–6th century), these small earthenware bells reinterpret archaeological forms as cheerful horses carrying wishes for happiness and good fortune.

The horse (uma) has long been regarded in Japanese culture as an auspicious animal, symbolizing strength, perseverance, safe journeys, and success. The name Fuku Koma (福駒) literally means "Lucky Horse," making this pair a traditional talisman believed to invite prosperity, protection, and positive fortune into the home.

Each bell is handcrafted in unglazed clay with a warm natural finish, accented by hand-painted details and decorative braided cords in red and green. Their rounded silhouettes and simple expressions echo the timeless aesthetic of ancient haniwa while reflecting the playful warmth of Showa-era Japanese folk souvenirs. Inside each figure is a small clay pellet that produces a soft, gentle chime when shaken, characteristic of traditional dorei (土鈴).

This matching pair makes a charming display, whether appreciated as a symbol of harmony, gifted as a wish for good luck, or added to a collection of Japanese folk art and shrine treasures. Their blend of historical inspiration and handcrafted simplicity beautifully captures the enduring appeal of Japan's traditional clay bells.
