FA02 - Goyōsen Folding Fan – Auspicious Ram Design

Vintage elegant Japanese folding fan features a design inspired by the ancient Chinese legend of the Five Immortal Rams (五羊仙)—a traditional symbol of peace, prosperity, and good fortune.

Delicately printed washi-style paper with a soft, wave-pattern background. Decorated with five stylized rams (one with pronounced purple horns) symbolizing the mythical rams that brought eternal harvests. Includes calligraphy within an ink circle (enso), with accompanying red seals, enhancing the artistic and spiritual essence.

With the orignal box and leaftlet with the history: According to Chinese legend, around 300 BCE, five celestial beings descended from heaven riding five golden rams, each bearing rice stalks. These divine rams brought eternal fertility and peace, becoming a symbol of fortune known as the “Legend of the Five Rams” (五羊仙のはなし).

In Japanese culture, the motif of Goyōsen is often used in art and seasonal items to express wishes for a happy and bountiful New Year. It may be displayed in the home or office to invite luck and harmony throughout the year. Commonly used in tea rooms, alcoves (tokonoma), or cultural exhibits. Or serve the traditional function of a folding fan—for gentle fanning in warm weather or during cultural events.
