FT138 - Japanese folk Whale boat 熊野古式鯨舟
A vintage Kumano Koshiki Kujirabune 熊野古式鯨舟. A traditional Japanese folk toy and cultural artifact with deep regional and historical significance. Coming from Kumano 熊野. A region in Wakayama Prefecture, famous for its ancient shrines, pilgrimage routes (Kumano Kodo), and deep connection to both Shinto and Buddhist traditions.
This toy is a miniature, stylized representation of a traditional whaling boat used in the Kumano region, which had a historical whaling culture. The boats are often decorated with bright colors, tairyō-bata (big catch flags), and sometimes whale figures, symbolizing both the hunting tradition and the wish for prosperity and abundance.
It is closely tied to the traditional whaling practices that were once common in coastal areas like Taiji (near Kumano), where communities would hunt small whales and dolphins using hand-thrown harpoons from rowboats. This is typically handcrafted from wood and decorated in vivid reds, blues, and golds. Often displayed during festivals or sold as good-luck charms for fishing safety and economic success. They reflect a regional pride and act as a vessel for preserving traditional knowledge and craftsmanship. While actual whaling is now heavily restricted and controversial, the toy serves as a cultural heritage item, representing the historical livelihood, maritime traditions, artisanal skill, symbolic celebration of nature's bounty and featured in folk art exhibits, museums, or tourist souvenirs within the Kumano area.
