FT185 - Wood Carving Zodiac Rabbit of Ise Jingū

FT185 - Wood Carving Zodiac Rabbit of Ise Jingū

Vintage crafted wooden figure from 1999. It is an Ise Jingu Eto Ittobori (伊勢神宮 干支一刀彫), a traditional Japanese zodiac carving made in association with Ise Grand Shrine (Ise Jingu), one of Japan’s most revered Shinto shrines. These carvings are created in limited designs each year to celebrate the Japanese zodiac (干支, eto), but also include stylized animal figures with symbolic meaning.

Ittōbori (一刀彫) means “one-knife carving,” a minimalist carving technique originating from the Nara region and also seen in Ise’s sacred crafts. The figure is cut from a single block of wood using bold, faceted strokes, giving it a sharp, almost polygonal style that reflects the carver’s confidence and precision. The geometric appearance emphasizes simplicity and natural beauty, resonating with the Shinto ideals of purity and reverence for nature.

Each year, a new figure is created to represent the corresponding Chinese zodiac animal, serving as a protective charm or talisman for the year. The accompanying wooden box features elegant calligraphy and a red seal, denoting its sacred origin and authenticity from Ise Jingu. These figures are not only items of spiritual significance but also cherished collectibles that embody traditional Japanese craftsmanship and religious culture.
