This charming Fushimi clay doll represents Hotei (布袋), one of Japan's beloved Seven Lucky Gods (七福神) and the patron of happiness, contentment, and abundance. Crafted by the esteemed Ōnishi Jūtarō Shōten (大西重太郎商店), a sixth-generation family-run shop based in Kyoto’s historic Fushimi Ward, this doll continues a tradition of handmade folk toys dating back centuries. The shop is located near the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine, a site steeped in spiritual energy and folk craftsmanship.

Hotei is depicted here joyfully holding a mallet adorned with a red bow, symbolizing the granting of wishes and wealth. His rounded belly and laughing expression radiate warmth and prosperity, reflecting his association with fortune and laughter. The figure is accented with gold leaf and vibrant hand-painted details, exemplifying the playful yet reverent aesthetic of Fushimi ningyō.

Fushimi Dolls (伏見人形) are considered the oldest form of Japanese earthenware dolls, originating in the Muromachi period and flourishing under the cultural patronage of Fushimi Inari. Traditionally sold as charms or children’s toys at shrine fairs, they became talismans of good luck, fertility, and household protection. Each doll is carefully molded and painted by hand, maintaining a unique folk charm.

This particular piece carries the spirit of Kyoto’s craftsmanship, Shinto beliefs, and joyful celebration of the Seven Lucky Gods — making it both a meaningful decorative piece and a collectible artifact of Japanese folk culture.
