The lion head of Takaoka, in Toyama Prefecture, is one of the region’s representative folk crafts. It is usually carved from lightweight paulownia wood, then lacquered in vivid red and decorated with bold black and gold patterns. Tufts of hair attached around the forehead and ears resemble the lion’s mane, giving the piece both dignity and liveliness.

Compared to other lion heads of Kyoto, Nara, or Edo, the Takaoka style feels more colorful, accessible, and celebratory. When the mouth opens, the lion head reveals a thick, bright red tongue and golden teeth, creating a striking and powerful impression. During performances, the opening and closing of the jaws add rhythm to the dance, while symbolizing the act of devouring evil spirits and inviting good fortune.

The tradition of lion dancing is said to have originated in India, where lions were revered by nomadic peoples as sacred and powerful creatures. They believed that dancing with lion masks would bring divine protection and strength. The practice later spread to China, then to the Korean Peninsula, and eventually to Japan.

In Japan, lion dances are performed across the country as rituals to ward off evil and pray for prosperity. Among them, the Takaoka lion head stands out for its exquisite craftsmanship and vivid colors. It is not only a tool for performance but also a local craft that embodies history, faith, and artistry.
