FT310 - Omiyage Japan Folk Crafts Kibori Kuma 木彫り熊

This is a traditional 木彫り熊 (kibori kuma) — a hand-carved wooden bear, one of Hokkaido’s most iconic folk crafts. Boldly carved from a single block of wood, this sculpture showcases the dynamic pose of a crouching bear, emphasizing strength and alertness. The chisel marks left intentionally visible across the body give the piece a rustic and powerful texture, highlighting the artisan’s carving technique and respect for the natural grain of the wood.

Originating in the town of Yakumo, Hokkaido, in the early 20th century, kibori kuma were inspired by the bear carvings brought back by local farmers who had studied in Switzerland. The craft quickly became a symbol of Hokkaido’s rugged wilderness and its native wildlife, especially the Ussuri brown bear, a revered presence in Ainu culture.

This particular bear, stained in a deep, almost charcoal black hue, brings a dramatic edge to the traditional form. Whether used as a decorative accent or collected as a regional handicraft, this kibori kuma embodies the spirit of Hokkaido — wild, strong, and deeply rooted in nature and tradition.
