This is a vintage ceramic Noh mask depicting Ko-omote (小面), one of the most iconic and beloved female masks in traditional Japanese Noh theater. Ko-omote represents a young woman of gentle beauty, often interpreted as a maiden of noble birth or a young bride, embodying purity, grace, and quiet emotional depth.

The mask features a smooth white surface with softly modeled contours, narrow almond-shaped eyes, and delicately painted lips forming a subtle, enigmatic smile. The restrained expression is characteristic of Ko-omote masks, which are designed to shift emotionally with light and viewing angle—appearing serene, wistful, or quietly joyful depending on how they are seen. Fine black lines define the hairline, while touches of red at the lips and cords add warmth and contrast.

Crafted in ceramic, this piece carries a tactile weight and presence, blending traditional Noh aesthetics with a durable sculptural medium. The red cords at the sides reference the traditional himo used to secure Noh masks during performance and enhance its authenticity as a display object.

Ko-omote masks are traditionally associated with themes of youth, elegance, fleeting beauty, and emotional subtlety, making this piece not only a striking decorative object but also a meaningful representation of classical Japanese performing arts. Ideal for collectors of Noh theater objects, Japanese masks, or refined wabi-inspired interior decor.

Wear consistent with age and handling adds character and a sense of history.
