This charming folk craft figure depicts Yokozuna Tarō (横綱太郎), a proud representation of the legendary Tosa Inu (土佐犬)—Japan’s revered fighting dog breed native to Kōchi Prefecture (formerly known as Tosa Province).

In the world of Tosa‑ken dog fighting 土佐犬闘犬, dogs can be ranked similar to sumo wrestlers — and the title 横綱 (Yokozuna) represents the top champion class in that system. Just like in 大相撲 (professional sumo), the Yokozuna rank is the highest possible, awarded to dogs that have repeatedly demonstrated superior strength, technique, and competitive success in official bouts

The figurine portrays the dog in a ceremonial sumo yokozuna-style outfit, complete with a white shimenawa rope and fringed red and gold mawashi-style cloth, evoking both the strength and dignity of a champion. The dog’s deep-set eyes and muscular, velvety form give it a determined yet endearing expression.

Traditionally bred for dog fighting, the Tosa Inu is known for its loyalty, discipline, and power, and has come to symbolize courage and protection. This miniature was likely sold as a regional omiyage (souvenir) from Kōchi, reflecting local pride and cultural heritage.
