FT399 - Shigaraki Tanuki Folk Craft 宝くじ狸
This ceramic figure is a 宝くじ狸 (Takarakuji Tanuki, “Lottery Raccoon Dog”), crafted in the traditional Shigaraki ware (信楽焼) style from Shigaraki, Kōka City, Shiga Prefecture (滋賀県甲賀市信楽町)—one of Japan’s oldest and most celebrated pottery regions.
Rendered with the classic features of a Shigaraki tanuki, the figure displays a warm, rustic glaze with rich earthy browns and subtle variations that highlight the texture of the clay. The tanuki wears its iconic wide-brimmed hat, symbolizing protection from misfortune, and carries a sake bottle marked with the character 「八」 (hachi), often associated with prosperity and good fortune. Its cheerful, wide-eyed expression and rounded form embody the playful and welcoming spirit that tanuki figures are known for.
At the front is a coin slot above the inscription 「宝くじ箱」 (takarakuji-bako, “lottery box”), indicating its function as a savings bank specifically intended for lottery tickets or funds. The hollow interior, accessible from the back opening, reinforces its practical use as a container while maintaining its role as a शुभ charm.
Unlike ordinary tanuki figures that broadly symbolize prosperity, business success, and good luck, this “Lottery Raccoon Dog” is a specialized variation believed to invite luck in games of chance, particularly lottery winnings. It combines the traditional auspicious symbolism of the tanuki—fortune, protection, and abundance—with a focused wish for sudden wealth and lucky windfalls.
Both decorative and functional, this piece beautifully blends folk belief, humor, and craftsmanship, making it a delightful example of Shigaraki pottery and a meaningful charm for those hoping to attract a bit of extra luck.
