FT403 - Omamori Inu from from Hokke-ji 法華寺
This omiyage folk craft of Omamori Inu (お守り犬) from Hokke-ji (法華寺) is a small yet deeply symbolic object rooted in Japan’s tradition of protective talismans.
The figure is a stylized white dog, simply modeled with rounded forms and hand-painted features that give it a gentle, watchful expression. Adorned with a red collar and a sprig of green pine painted along its body, the design combines auspicious elements—the dog, a long-standing symbol of protection and safe childbirth, and pine (matsu), representing longevity and resilience.
Housed in its original wooden box with accompanying explanatory leaflet, the piece reflects its role not merely as a decorative item but as a spiritual charm (omamori). At Hokke-ji, a temple historically associated with women’s faith and protection, such figures were given or purchased as blessings for health, family safety, and especially protection of children.
The simplicity of the form, paired with its sacred association, embodies the essence of Japanese folk belief—where everyday objects carry quiet spiritual meaning. Both humble and heartfelt, this Omamori Inu serves as a tangible expression of care, protection, and enduring good fortune.
