FT425 - Lucky God Wood Craft from Ise Jingū 伊勢神宮
This pair of Nifukujin (二福神)—depicting Ebisu (恵比寿) and Daikokuten (大黒天)—is a finely carved example of itto-bori (一刀彫) woodcraft, traditionally associated with the sacred region of Ise Jingū (伊勢神宮).
Hand-carved from a single block of wood using bold, decisive knife cuts, these figures embody the essence of itto-bori carving, where simplicity and strength of form take precedence over fine detailing. The visible chisel marks and faceted surfaces give each deity a lively, expressive character, reflecting both the artisan’s skill and the warmth of natural wood.
Ebisu, the deity of prosperity, fishing, and honest labor, is shown with a gentle smile and distinctive headgear, while Daikokuten, the god of wealth and abundance, appears with a rounded, joyful expression and traditional attributes. Together, they form the auspicious pair known as the “Two Gods of Fortune,” symbolizing good business, prosperity, and household happiness.
Originating from the spiritual heartland of Japan, crafts connected to Ise Jingū often carry a sense of purity and reverence. The use of natural wood and unadorned carving aligns with Shinto aesthetics, emphasizing harmony with nature and the beauty of simplicity.
