This charming vintage wooden Daruma (木製だるま) comes from Zuiganji Temple (瑞巌寺) in Matsushima, Miyagi Prefecture, near Sendai. Zuiganji is one of the most important Zen temples of the Tōhoku region and has long been closely associated with the history and culture of Matsushima.
Carved from natural wood, the Daruma retains the warm grain of the material and is decorated by hand in a restrained palette of black, white, and red. Its powerful eyebrows and determined expression evoke the traditional image of Bodhidharma (Daruma), the legendary founder of Zen Buddhism. On the front is the red character 福 (fuku), meaning “good fortune” or “blessing,” emphasizing its role as an auspicious talisman.
Daruma are traditionally associated with perseverance, resilience, good luck, and the fulfillment of wishes. Their rounded form recalls the well-known saying nanakorobi yaoki (七転び八起き) — “fall seven times, rise eight” — symbolizing the determination to continue despite difficulties.
This example is particularly appealing because it is accompanied by its original omikuji (おみくじ) fortune paper, linking the piece directly to the Japanese custom of receiving a written fortune during a temple visit. The combination of the small wooden Daruma and temple fortune gives it the intimate character of a traditional Japanese pilgrimage or travel keepsake.
