A vintage Japanese wooden carving depicting Ebisu (恵比寿), one of Japan’s beloved Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin 七福神), traditionally associated with prosperity, good fortune, fishing, and commercial success.

Ebisu is instantly recognizable by his cheerful, smiling face, traditional court-style hat, and the large sea bream (tai 鯛) tucked beneath his arm. The fish is an important symbol of celebration and good fortune in Japan, as its name echoes the word medetai (めでたい), meaning auspicious or worthy of celebration.

This delightful figure is carved from natural wood, featuring expressive facial details, flowing traditional robes, and a raised hand in a joyful gesture. The contrasting dark-brown finish highlights the carved textures and natural wood grain, while the decorative wave motifs along the base evoke Ebisu’s close connection to the sea.

As the patron deity of fishermen and merchants, Ebisu has long been cherished in Japanese homes and businesses as a symbol of successful trade, abundance, and happiness.

With its rustic character, warm wooden tones, and lively expression, this vintage carving is a wonderful example of Japanese folk-inspired craftsmanship. A meaningful decorative piece for collectors of Japanese mingei (民芸), traditional wooden sculptures, and auspicious ornaments.

Size: 13 x 7 x 30cm
