FT619 - Tokoname Ware Rat Zodiac Figurine Set 常滑焼
FT619 - Tokoname Ware Rat Zodiac Figurine Set 常滑焼
A vintage zodiac figurine set featuring two stylised rats, crafted in Tokoname ware (常滑焼), one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns (Rokkoyō).
The set consists of a larger and a smaller rat, both finished in an elegant pearlescent white with a subtle silvery sheen. Their rounded bodies, oversized circular ears, pointed noses, and tiny red eyes create a playful yet minimalist appearance. The smooth, sculptural forms give these traditional zodiac ornaments a distinctly modern aesthetic.
Tokoname ware (常滑焼) originates from Tokoname in Aichi Prefecture, a historic pottery centre with a ceramic tradition dating back to the Heian period. Although particularly celebrated for its unglazed red clay teapots, Tokoname also produces a wide variety of decorative ceramics and traditional folk crafts.
In the Japanese zodiac, the Rat (子, Ne) is the first of the twelve animals and symbolises intelligence, resourcefulness, prosperity, and new beginnings. Traditionally displayed during the corresponding zodiac year, these figurines are considered auspicious ornaments, expressing wishes for happiness and good fortune.
This set comes with its original presentation box, marked 高級陶器 (High-Quality Ceramics) and とこなめ焼 (Tokoname Ware), along with an original leaflet explaining the origins and cultural significance of the twelve zodiac animals.
A delightful example of Japanese vintage decorative ceramics, perfect for collectors of eto (干支) zodiac ornaments, Japanese folk crafts, or minimalist animal sculptures.
