A beautiful vintage Japanese cast iron dog sculpture, created by the celebrated Japanese sculptor and metal artist Sotaro Saegusa (三枝惣太郎, 1911–2006).

This charming sculpture depicts a standing dog in Saegusa's distinctive modernist style, characterised by simplified geometric forms, clean lines, and a quiet yet expressive presence. Its elongated body, pointed ears, raised tail, and subtly modelled facial features capture the animal's alert and loyal character.

The sculpture features a beautiful verdigris-green patina, reminiscent of aged bronze, with a softly textured surface that enhances its sculptural qualities. Depending on the angle of light, the surface reveals subtle variations in colour and texture, giving the piece a changing visual character.

Sotaro Saegusa was a Japanese sculptor and metal artisan known for his distinctive animal sculptures, working primarily in cast iron and bronze. His artistic approach combined traditional Japanese craftsmanship with modern sculptural abstraction.

Rather than pursuing strict realism, Saegusa focused on capturing the essential character and spirit of his subjects through simplified forms and carefully balanced proportions. His small-scale sculptures often depict animals and zodiac figures, reflecting his appreciation for nature, symbolism, and everyday beauty.

Today, his works are appreciated by collectors of Japanese modernist sculpture, vintage metalwork, and traditional decorative arts.
